My portraiture and still life work link the traditions of 17th century Dutch painting with contemporary practice. Fascinated by the realism of the interior compositions and techniques used by the masters Vermeer and Rembrandt, my work suggests the changing interplay of light and colour on various surfaces. It engages with the idea of light passing through dappled glass to highlight, in both literal and metaphorical terms, the relationships between illusion and reality and the role that distortion can play in perspective. Over a number of years, I have developed my own signature style, based on meticulous attention to detail and tonal fragmentation of reflective surfaces including human skin and textiles. My figurative paintings have been described as ‘immortalising the subject, with surfaces floating somewhere between tissue and stone'.
